When grit meets opportunity in Maasin City.
Supporting young athletes, scholarship students, and grassroots jiu-jitsu growth in Southern Leyte through tuition assistance, gi distribution, and long-term community support.
Long before we ever stepped foot in Southern Leyte, we had already begun carrying the community with us.
We first heard about a group of kids from Ronin Jiu Jitsu – Leyte / Gotosan Team training for hours each day on worn mats outside their local chapel — often without proper uniforms, consistent tuition support, or certainty that they would even be able to continue training after the next typhoon season.
What they lacked in resources, they made up for with heart, discipline, and commitment.
Standing beside them were instructors Jack and Odie, two coaches holding the entire program together through sacrifice, consistency, and belief in their students.
“This wasn’t just a jiu-jitsu program. It was a lifeline.”
What We Found on the Ground
When we arrived in Maasin City, the reality was even more powerful than the story.
We saw young athletes showing up early and staying late. We saw students drilling with focus and competitive intensity despite difficult circumstances. And we saw coaches teaching every day without salary, recognition, or guarantees.
For many of these students, the mats had become more than a place to train. They had become a safe space, a source of structure, and a pathway toward confidence and belonging.
Removing the Weight They Should Never Have Had to Carry
One of the hardest parts of the story was realizing how much financial pressure these young athletes had quietly learned to carry.
Students worried about tuition. Families struggled to support consistent training. Some athletes shared torn or borrowed uniforms simply to stay involved.
So we made a decision:
We covered a full year of tuition support for every student in the program.
No student would have to stop training because of financial hardship. No family would have to choose between basic needs and opportunity.
Outfitting the Entire Program
Tuition support was only part of the mission.
Through our broader global gi distribution initiative, we were also able to bring enough gis and no-gi equipment to outfit the entire program.
For many students, it was the first properly fitting uniform they had ever owned.
One by one, students received gis, rashguards, shorts, and belts that allowed them to train with confidence and dignity.
More Than Equipment
While the uniforms and tuition support mattered, the experience reinforced something much larger:
talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not.
The students in Southern Leyte already had the discipline, hunger, and work ethic. What they needed was support, visibility, and people willing to invest in their future.
“We came to give — but Southern Leyte gave us everything back tenfold.”
Looking Forward
Southern Leyte remains one of the most meaningful outreach experiences connected to our mission so far.
As Sibol Foundation continues to grow, we hope to continue supporting programs like Ronin Jiu Jitsu – Leyte / Gotosan Team through scholarship assistance, equipment distribution, mentorship, and long-term community partnership.
Communities like this remind us why the mission matters: because sometimes the smallest opportunities create the biggest changes.
