Building For the Future with Davao City Sports Development Council

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Laying the groundwork for youth jiu-jitsu development in Davao City.

Building partnerships with local leadership to create sustainable opportunities for children, athletes, and underserved communities through martial arts.

Real long-term impact begins with relationships.

During our recent visit to Davao City, we had the opportunity to meet with Sir Michael Aportadera, head of the Davao City Sports Development Council, to begin discussions surrounding a collaborative initiative focused on growing jiu-jitsu and expanding opportunities for children throughout the region.

The meeting represented an important step forward in creating sustainable, community-supported programs that can positively impact young people through structure, mentorship, discipline, and access to sport.

Building Something Sustainable

Over the past several years, we have seen firsthand how powerful jiu-jitsu can be when introduced into underserved communities. Beyond competition, the sport creates confidence, accountability, friendships, leadership, and healthy outlets for young people.

Our conversations in Davao focused on how local government support, community leadership, coaches, and nonprofit outreach can work together to create programs with real long-term impact.

“The goal isn’t just to teach jiu-jitsu. The goal is to create opportunity.”

Planting the Seeds for a Pilot Program

Part of the discussion centered around the early framework for a pilot outreach initiative designed to bring organized jiu-jitsu instruction and mentorship opportunities directly into local communities.

The vision includes creating structured training opportunities for children who may not otherwise have access to martial arts, while also helping strengthen relationships between local academies, coaches, schools, healthcare professionals, and community organizations.

We believe meaningful youth development happens when programs are rooted not only in athletics, but also in mentorship, consistency, and community support.

Collaboration Across Multiple Sectors

In addition to meeting with the Davao City Sports Development Council, we were also able to connect with representatives from the City Health Office earlier that same morning to discuss broader ideas surrounding youth wellness and community engagement.

We are extremely grateful for the openness and encouragement shown by local leadership throughout these discussions.

Special thanks to my cousin, Doc Enzo Villafuerte, for helping coordinate the meetings and bringing everyone together. Efforts like these only move forward because of people willing to invest their time, relationships, and energy into creating something positive for the community.

Looking Forward

While these conversations represent only the beginning stages of a larger vision, they are an important reminder that meaningful change is possible when local leaders, coaches, healthcare professionals, and community advocates work together.

We are excited to continue building relationships in Davao and hopeful about what can be accomplished together in the years ahead.

The work continues — one partnership, one academy, and one child at a time.
